  • Nanchang Uprising

    On 1 August 1927, the Chinese Communist Party launched an armed uprising in Nanchang, Jiangxi, against the right-wing Nationalists and their Nanjing government. Following the Shanghai massacre months earlier, the First United Front had collapsed. The uprising initiated the Chinese Civil War and marked the beginning of independent Communist military action.

  • The Shanghai Massacre of 1927

    On 12 April 1927, forces of the National Revolutionary Army, together with triad members, violently suppressed Communist Party organizations and leftist elements in Shanghai. Supported by Chiang Kai-shek and conservative Kuomintang factions, the event was one of the major incidents that marked the rupture of the KMT-CCP alliance and the beginning of the Chinese Civil War.

  • Rif War begins

    In 1921, armed conflict broke out between Spain and Berber tribes of the Rif region in northern Morocco. Led by Abd el-Krim, Rifian forces used guerrilla tactics and captured Western weaponry to repeatedly defeat Spanish troops. France intervened in 1925, escalating the war, which ended with the surrender of the Rifian resistance.

  • Outbreak of the French conquest of Morocco

    In 1907, France began its conquest of the Sultanate of Morocco by occupying Oujda on 29 March. Subsequent military campaigns led to the Treaty of Fes in 1912, establishing the French protectorate, while pacification operations continued until 1934.

  • Old Parliament House Opens

    On 9 May 1927, Old Parliament House (originally the Provisional Parliament House) in Canberra, Australia, opened as the new seat of the federal Parliament, marking the relocation from Melbourne to the new capital. It was designed as a temporary building, intended to house Parliament until a permanent building was constructed. The building served as the legislative seat until the opening of the new Parliament House in 1988.

  • Outbreak of the Basmachi Movement

    1916–1934Russian Turkestan

    In 1916, an uprising by Muslim peoples of Central Asia against tsarist conscription and colonial rule broke out in Turkestan, marking the beginning of the Basmachi movement. This decentralized resistance later turned against Soviet rule and became the most protracted anti-colonial armed struggle in the region, gradually subsiding only by 1934.
