  • Invasion of Ryukyu by Satsuma

    1609Ryukyu Islands

    In 1609, the Japanese domain of Satsuma invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom, conquered it after months of fighting, and reduced it to a vassal state, ceding the Amami Islands. Ryukyu thereafter became a dual tributary to both Satsuma and Ming China until its annexation by Japan in the 19th century.

  • Construction of Sasayama Castle

    1609

    Sasayama Castle, an early Edo Period Japanese castle, was built around the early 17th century in present-day Tamba-Sasayama, Hyōgo, later serving as the seat of the Sasayama Domain. Its ruins have been protected as a National Historic Site since 1956 and it is listed among Japan's Top 100 Castles.
