- Founding of Tlacotalpan
In the mid‑16th century, Spanish colonists founded the river port town of Tlacotalpan on the Papaloapan River near the Gulf coast of Mexico. Built on what was then an island, the settlement featured wide streets, colonnaded houses in varied styles and colours, and became one of the few interior river ports in Latin America. Its well‑preserved colonial urban fabric later earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1998.

- Outbreak of the Ottoman–Safavid War of 1532–1555
